From the bottom of my heart which was stirred by pity and sympathy
I added to my night prayers shortly afterwards :

        " Dear Lord, send him a good wife who will be a good
         mother to his dear children, and let him be happy from
         now on."

　　　「まもなく大佐とイボンヌ王妃の婚約が発表される
　　　　と思うわ。」

大佐への憐れみと同情で混沌としていますけど、心の底から
夜のお祈りにはこのことを付け加えていますわ：

　　　「主よ、愛しき子らの母となるべきよき伴侶を
　　　　彼に捧げ給わんことを。この先ずっと、彼が
　　　　幸福であり続けんことを。」

As the weeks passed by, I grew more accustomed to my work.
There was a certain routine to be followed every day.   
The Baroness liked to rest in the mornings.   I was in charge
of all the children, had to wake them up, take care of their break-
fasts, and see the older ones off to school.

数週間が過ぎゆく中、私は、だんだん仕事に慣れて
きました。毎日の中では、遵守すべき日課がありました。
夫人は午前中は、くつろいで過ごしています。　私は
子供たち全員の世話係で、全員を起こし、朝食の用意を
します。そして上の子らには、学校に行かせます。

of.   The children had to wear leather hats, leggings and
leather gloves.

それは全くの仕事でした。だって、配慮すべきことが、
あまりに多くて。　子供たちには皮革製の帽子を被らせ
レギンスを穿かせ、皮の手袋をさせなければなりません。

leggings     辞典ではレギンス（伸縮性のある子供用のズボン）
           という意味で載っているが、ここでは、左右別々の　
　　 　　　ソックスと解したほうがよい。
